Insurance and a "pre-existing" injury"?

My husband started working for a company, we signed up for the insurance, which was due to set in 60 days after date of hire. 5 days before the insurance kicks in, he tore his Achilles tendon. He can't have surgery because we don't have the money to pay for it out of pocket. Once his insurance starts on Monday, would they treat it as a pre existing injury? We are totally lost with this, he was the breadwinner, we have 3 kids, he can't work because he needs 2 feet to drive his semi-truck. I am going to start looking for a job on Monday to pay the bills, but know I will probably not make half of what he made, so will barely be scraping by if that. I have no idea what to do about this...any suggestions...please?
