Can you believe that Freedom of Speech was actually banned in World War I?

Did you know that Congress ped the Espionage (1917) and Sedition Act (1918) banning all speech in disfavor of American involvement in WWI? The funny thing, however, is that the US government claimed that going to war was an effort to "save our freedoms". How hypocritical.
